Basil: nature's little powerhouse

From ancient times basil has been celebrated not just for tastiness but also for its incredible health benefits.

First things first, basil isn't just your average herb—it's a powerhouse of vitality. With its rich array of nutrients, including vitamins A, K, and C, as well as manganese, magnesium, and potassium, basil packs a punch when it comes to nourishing your body from the inside out. Say hello to glowing skin, strengthened bones, and boosted immunity.

But wait, there's more. Basil isn't just about physical health—it's a champion for mental well-being too. Need a little memory boost? Basil's aromatic compounds have been shown to enhance cognitive function and sharpen your focus, making it the perfect study buddy or productivity booster.

And its natural anti-inflammatory properties can help alleviate symptoms of PMS, providing much-needed relief when you need it most. Say goodbye to cramps and mood swings, and hello to a sense of calm and balance.

Your little jar of basil of joy

This flavoured oil dressing is perfect for summer salads, lifting your mood and awakening joy.

Makes 240ml

A small bunch of basil

110ml extra virgin olive oil

110ml grapeseed oil

  • Boil 500ml water in a saucepan. Fill another small pan with cold water and add some ice cubes to it.

  • Hold the basil leaves by their stems and immerse the leaves in the boiling water for 8 seconds.

  • Then plunge into the iced water to stop them discolouring and cooking further.

  • Dry with kitchen paper, cut off the stems and put the leaves into a blender.

  • Add the two oils and blitz until smooth.

  • Use immediately, or if you want to store for a few days in the fridge, leave to infuse for 1-2 hours then strain through a fine mesh strainer or muslin cloth.

  • Transfer to a clean jar and use within 3 to 4 weeks.
